"I suffered for 12 long years, starting in my mid 40’s. My legs were numb almost to my knees. I couldn’t understand how you could have numbness and such pain at the same time. "I am not sure when I started having problems with my feet. It seems like it became noticeable about 20 years ago.

At first my feet would ache from time to time, then my feet would ache so bad that I had to limit my time standing or walking. In the last two years I have had to change the way I have lived my life. I could no longer go hiking with my husband or just take a walk. After the New Year, the pain progressed through my legs and into my hips. Some days I could not stand long enough to cook a meal.

I remember asking my mom if anyone in the family had problems with their feet about 20 years ago, so I started looking for answers back then. I never talked to my PCP because I honestly did not know how to describe it. I tried shoe inserts, but they only worked for a little while. I was surprised that Dr. Richey diagnosed me with neuropathy, after all I do not have diabetes. I believed you had to have diabetes to have neuropathy.

I knew it was just a matter of time before I would need a wheelchair.

I heard about the Tri-State Neuropathy Centers on the Bloom daddy show on the radio. It was not just a commercial, it was an interview. Dr. Richey explained what neuropathy feels like and he described all my symptoms. He said they would do a free test in the office and if I did test positive for neuropathy, I would be put a program that would help my body to heal itself – no drugs. I have had reactions to most drugs for most of my life and try to avoid them.

With my husband’s support and encouragement, I signed up for the program.

I started in April and have to say in only 2 ½ months I see a significant improvement. I can take short walks, cook and I have even been gardening. It feels like a miracle. I plan to get back into volunteer work.

Have you noticed that when you go to the doctor’s, no one really listens? I was so surprised that Dr. Ritchey listened and responded. I also have Reynaud’s in my hands, and he suggested trying the light therapy on my hands also. I am and it is working. It makes a difference when someone cares enough to listen and make suggestions. "A dear friend of mine from Pittsburgh saw Dr. Richey’s ad in Pittsburgh Fifty-Five Plus magazine, the sister magazine to Northern Connection magazine.
